I know the 1970 S small date is the good one. But, how about a 1970D small date?

Thanks for looking

i suppose this constitutes a question from a "novice" - but why are you comparing the diagnostics of a "s" mint mark - to a denver minted coin? is there even a small date/large date variety - from the denver mint. (i suppose that there probably is - and I will be getting schooled here), but I just needed to ask.

I'm fairly certain that the small date variety is only for the 1970S. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

CoinCents, there is no large/small date for Denver minted coins in 1970. Only from San Fran. Besides look at the side by side shots you show. The tail of the 7 is below the bottom of the 0 on you Denver coin. Look at haw even they are on the San Fran small date. Look at the curl of the 9 on your Denver, nothing like the small date San Fran.

I missed a lot. I was just comparing the tops of the dates.

Thank you all for your replies.

It takes time. Just commit to memory or take notes of what you learn. Include graphics. It will sink in.

I think there might be something more to this after all, or is it just my eyes but the "9"s are showing characteristics of each and maybe the "7" is close but nothing compared to the other one. Just noticed these while taking photos of them together.

Correct the 'S' mint mark had normal and small dates. None of the other mints had small dates. Your coin is show die wear and an example of over polishing. This alters the devices. The die polishing reduces the size of the devices evenly, and the die wear will show on the side of the devices towards the rim. It started out as a normal die, but die events altered the die. Not a doubled die or a small date. There were two obverses for the large and small dates that year:
