I have a similar thread going for storing ASEs w/o OGP to save room in my safe (to which I've received some great replies), and I'd like to do the same with my 5-oz P-pucks. Those OGP boxes take up way too much room. Not that storing short cylinders is the most efficient use of space in general, but you know what I mean.

Anyone have suggestions? I like the furniture that I've seen posted here... with multiple thin wooden drawers almost like a mini flat file like you'd see for architectural drawings and blueprint storage. But that won't work for me at this time.

I'm not sure albums would work with these heavy monsters, or save any room.

Ultimately I'd like to remove the pucks from their OGP, keeping them in their OGP capsules, but I don't want the capsules to get scratched and I'd like some organization.

Thinking some sort of long box like a 2x2 coin box, but really want to make sure the capsules are protected in such a manner.

I wonder if I could find any old 3.5" floppy disk cases/boxes that are long... hmmm...

Yeah, I would suggest a floppy disk or possible a CD case holder.

If you're handy with tools and want a project, I'm sure you could make a holder out of some thin hardwood, a dremel and nails. You could then hot glue velvet or felt to each divider to protect the coin capsules.

Thanks for the idea, Atlas. I didn't think about building something. I have a small woodshop and I enjoy building small projects like that, so that is certainly a possibility. My concern with wood and glue and such is off-gassing that might affect the coins. This would reside in my safe so my concern would be not only for the 5-oz coins but everything in the safe.

Yeah, many adhesives have nasty chemicals that can volatilize. I think Elmer's wood glue is pretty safe though once it's dry.

They make coin tubes for the 5 ouncers, but you can't use the original capsule.

I don't know, would a box like this work (see link)?

Good point. Would need to look into the wood as well, since certain chemicals might react there. I think you'd be fine with natural hardwood.

As for cushioning, perhaps just felt folded and resting in the individual partitions so no glue is involved, but the coin is protected.

I'm currently on the look out for a college getting rid of a wood map cabinet. I don't know if 5-ouncers would fit, but one would be perfect for laying out a number coins.

In theory it would work if the partitions were the right size, but it looks like the biggest they make is for large dollars. I'd need something with partitions big enough to hold cylinders 3.5" in diameter. Maybe I could play around with some of the box options and pull out dividers to create the right size... hmm...

So tonight I started to pull a few coins out of their OGP to get a visual idea of what the space savings would be and it's crazy how much room the OGP box takes up. Just removing the capsule from the box is nearly a 90% reduction in volume (yes, I did the math).

Below is a quick photo I took of just 7 of the coins stacked next to the OGP boxes. Crazy!

For now I'm going to carefully stack them, maybe with a piece of felt between coins, until I find or make a storage solution.

edit - I just finished popping out the rest of the series and my fingers are absolutely roached from prying those capsules out of the trays. Ouch!
