Hello. I am working in Jerusalem and a colleague of mine is from a Bedouin family (although he's settled now) and a friend of his is always finding old coins out in the desert.

Attached to this post is a photo of a gold coin the guy found about 10 miles outside Jerusalem in a stream bed. It's gold and he didn't take a photo of the back side. It looks like a Greek coin, but I can't find an exact match googling.

Any ideas?

Going to need a clearer picture of both sides.

Need to turn it 90 degrees anti-clockwise too.

Diameter and weight might be useful as well as the back side...

If it is around 10mm it could be an electrum Hecte of some sort, I have seen that portrait before somewhere...

That's Athena. Has it been chemically tested as gold? WHat is the diameter? What is the weight? Is the reverse an owl?

Rotated and tried to enhance the image a bit.

Something about this isn't sitting right with me. It's not completely unheard of for tourist replicas to be dropped and show up in unusual places.

I think that this "coin" must be a replica too...

Would like to see a picture of the reverse, but I tend to agree with both that it's not right.

I'll ask to get more info and a pic of the back, but I don't know the owner. Maybe it's fake, but the owner isn't selling it so he may not care. The guy I work with has brought me 2 or 3 coins he's found in his village over the years some dating back to the 50's. He's never had them professionally graded since he just likes to keep them at home, but I keep asking him to take me to where he finds the coins to let me look around. :)

Side story...when this guy was a little boy he was still living in a Bedouin camp between Jericho and Jerusalem. He told me he and his friends used to go into caves and find old pottery, set them upright and use for stone throwing practice. :( He said he regrets doing that now.....
