Can anyone tell me why the obverse and reverse rims are so different? I've seen this before with Mercurys.

I would say because of the excessive wear and damage to the coin. reverse has a lot more wear than obverse.

Yes it does, I was wondering why though. Maybe it has something to do with the design. I don't know.

I suspect the relief and rim height on the reverse of the Mercury dimes is less than on the obverse. You will very commonly see this on these dimes with the rev rims gone and still present on the obv.
