Are Morgan's with Cuds around the rim caused by dies nearing the end of their life? How common are they? I ran across this one this morning and I was just curious.

I think you have a LDS VAM-6. Your coin appears to have the massive doubling under the 1 in the date and if you look at the full plate photo of the date in the VAM listing the Cuds appear to match. http://www.vamworld.com/1889-O+VAM-6 and yes rim Cuds are quite common on Morgan dollars.
