The seller says it is not cleaned, but I am not sure. I am waiting for actual pictures and not scans. What thinketh thou?

Hard to tell much from the scans. UNC details? AU details? Looks like a little bit on wear on the high points.

Or a possible fake? Look at the date, there's something really wrong with it.

The last two digits look thinner than the other two. The whole date is also shifted left and tilted a couple of degrees counter-clockwise from the rest of the design elements' orientation.

I don't know too much about Two Cent varieties though, so hopefully an expert on chime in. Could just be some very bad date placement by a MInt employee on the die.

The seller also has a 30-year (!!) authenticity guarantee.

This one looks fake to me, I don't like the digits in the date.

I don't like the look of that 6.

This is strange because this seems like a very reputable seller...

Not my series, couldn't speculate on authenticity. Not real fond of the look, though.

I'm definitely not qualified to speculate on authenticity, but my questions on it would be the 6 and is the 2nd S in states too far over? (I only received my first 2 cent coin in the mail today (VFish) and haven't gotten a chance to really look at it.

Would the rim ding make it a details grade?

My guess is counterfeit as well, I've never seen a 6 (in the date) that looks so thin on the left side, I went though all my photos, and Frank Leone's 1864 attribution book, nothing comes even close to this one.

Color is weird, and I wonder what the exact weight is?

The date placement isn't a telling fault however, there are a few logotype stamps that have a very similar placement where the 6 is close to the ball, and slanted similarly. The "S's" in STATES don't match up either, they should be from the same style, on this coin the first S is much thicker.

After what I've been seeing in the EAC group as to counterfeits, the coins are getting so good they are getting slabbed by PCGS and NGC regularly now, scary stuff! There has been at least a dozen high dollar coins in genuine slabs from PCGS and NGC that are now known to be fakes, both companies are aware and are looking into it, but not really speaking out publicly as it sure doesn't shed a good light on the coins they've been missing as to authenticity lately.
