I've always wondered if a bank's coin counter spits silver out or keeps it. A local couple banks have 20-30 dollars in half dollars but never seem to find silver in them. Should I stop going to these banks?

I have gotten a few bags of half dollars from my bank's coin machine once it was full and found lots of silver. May depend on the individual machine at each bank but in my limited experience they do not sort out the silver.

Depends on the machine... the big sorters can be programmed to reject anything that doesn't match. See: http://www.pennysorter.com/

I purchase all the bags from a local bank, there machine does not sort out silver.
However the machine rejects Canadian dimes that are not Silver, so I do get some Canadian silver dimes almost every two weeks.
I always find silver in the halves.

I would think that even in the less expensive sorters, the really worn older silver might get kicked out more often. I work in a bullion store, and there are two guys that work at the bank who come in regularly with 90%. Next time one is in, I'll ask if the silver gets kicked out, or if they just set aside the silver when they notice it.

The LaRue machine my CU uses does not reject silver.

Coinstar machines typically reject silver.

I just spoke with a guy that works in the change room at a US Bank. He said the counters there do not kick out silver, and he spots it by sight and sound. He said that within a couple years of working there he needed glasses because of constantly looking for 90%...

They do not separate them. I was the lead supervisor of the cashiers cage at a casino for 5 years. We had a fee free coin machine right by the front doors. I emptied it everyday. I have found tons of silver in there. Every bag of dimes was good for at least 15silvers. I also found many silver halves and quarters. If there is an unknown coin (foreign) it would be spit back to the patron. If there was an unknown object (cough drops, cigarette butts, pendants, fake fingernails, screws and nails etc...) it would go into a divert bucket which we also had to sort threw and empty daily. It does not separate silver. The coin counters at banks(where I currently work) are mostly used by roll hunters who have already removed the silver but do not want to re-roll the coins.
