I have researched this for years and can find absolutely no information on this coin. There is a number of "986" struck in it which leads me to believe, with no supporting information, that it may have been a limited release. It is approximately .8" in diameter. Thanks for any information on the coin. It is supposedly not been out of the plastic sleeve since 1963 or 1964, when it was acquired my my wife's grandfather.

Thanks very much for any help.

I have only seen medals commemorating US presidents originating from the US, Liberia, and a few pacific islands that like to churn out commemoratives for other countries. Yours is most likely of US origin; "Ich bin ein Berliner" was just one of JFK's more famous speeches.

The 986 most likely denotes 98.6% pure gold. This is just a little over 23k. A jewler would be able to confirm this.

Also, I do have to say that is not a very flattering portrait of JFK!

Coral-Reefer, there is one just like it for sale on the vcoins website. Evidently it is 0.986 gold. I'm not sure that I can insert links yet, but you should be able to find it there, recently sold by "World Money Shop".

Thanks for the help. I found where the coin sold for under $200. So much for it "paying for a college education" as stated in 1964!
