I found this coin in a bagful of otherwise cheap and common world coins I acquired last week. I never even bothered looking it up in Krause until just now, so I didn't even realise it was potentially scarcer or more valuable than usual until I saw a similar one (in nicer condition) being sold for a couple hundred AU$ in a local coin show today.
Germany-Brd-2-Mark-1951-J---Help-Value? Germany-Brd-2-Mark-1951-J---Help-Value?

As you can see from the scans, it's fairly well preserved as far as wear is concerned, but it's got that nasty red-brown discolouration almost completely covering it, the kind that cupronickel coins get when they're immersed in pool chlorine or briefly buried in humic soil.

I'd appreciate any opinions (especially from collectors in Germany) on what this coin might be worth, since I haven't yet paid the folks I received this coin from, and I want to give them "fair value". I was going to pay them at least AU$20. For comparison, my Krause says US$28 in VF, US$45 in EF, no price for Fine or lower.

Too bad there are no mintage figures. Still though because of it's rarity I'd stick pretty close to the list price. I looked around and only saw a few instance of the coin. One being listed for $50 for XF-AU.

nice find

Thanks guys. Still keen to hear more opinions.

GO, I found this translated site with mintages, though apparently the figures are largely useless because the coins were officially withdrawn in 1958, and presumably mostly destroyed (hence the relatively high price).

2DM (Ni:250/Cu:750) - 1951 Mintages:
München(D)19,564,160; Stuttgart(F)22,608,732; Karlsruhe(G)13,011.931; Hamburg(J)20,104,239; (Jaeger 1991)

www.sammler.com is about the best site left out there... https://www.inkoze.de. used to be great, but its been broken for a few months now :(

Now, WHAT DO YOU MEAN youre going to give them good Value? Arent you kinda doing their job for them, researching the coin and what its worth? Give them the minimum that you can get away with... ;)

As for Value, well, the D, F & J are all around the same value; its the G that is REALLY worth something! The two current Katalog's I have at hand say (1951J):
- Franquinet Katalog 2007: stgl EUR125,00
- Micheal Heinrich Katalog 2007: ss EUR48,00; vz EUR68,00; vz/stgl EUR95,00

Of course ebay is also a fair test at times too...

That is, by the way, the only coin from this country that cannot be redeemed. It was indeed withdrawn from circulation 50 years ago - and while even the older BDL and BRD pieces are still worth face value, this one is not. Guess it would be possible to change that, but it would be pointless since the coin is worth more than face anyway ...

Here are some German opinions and coins for comparison:

I usually find them to be quite conservative in their grading. I would also consider your offer reasonable due to the condition of the coin.
