I found a dollar bill after I got done work and it had a green - next to the serial number. I have been collecting since I was 8 almost 13 years and have never seen this. I have multiple star notes but this is not a star note. Please help me identify what the error is called.

Interesting. I've not seen anything like that before but I am familiar with the countertop on which you took the photo. Curious to hear what the experts think of this note.

There is a color shift in that line that doesn't match the ink that the BEP uses. Also, I cannot imagine how it could have happened during printing. If you think otherwise, there is no harm in holding onto it until you can show an expert in person at a coin show.

It is a recognized error. Here is another example which was identified by dealer Lew Dufault

Excellent, lettow! I never saw one like that before. Has any explanation been given? Both errors have the same color shift and shape. It's a puzzler....

Yes you have the real deal. You can find this error in the "US Error Note Encyclopedia" by Stephen M Sullivan 2nd edition page 355. Book value in fine condition is $1000! I have more than 6 of these. Two are consecutive star notes in CU

The error is listed as a mismatch prefix error. I am told that researchers of the BEP have found that this may be associated with ridges on the numbering wheels that overprint the serial numbers. As far as values, the book is a guide. Something this esoteric is hard to value. There is one ebay seller with a few of these with astronomical Buy I Now prices but honestly I have never seen one trade. Hope that helps.

I don't say this often, but this is something you want to send to a grading service for authentication.
