I am guessing that this is damage but still thought that it was interesting. Plus it never hurts to make sure.

Looks like post mint damage. There are nothing with the normal minting process to made that type of mark. Looks like a reeded coin like a larger coin with the rough edge was moved into the coin (Bag marked/Squeezed with a vise/or coins struck with a patterned edge could have made that mark. Definitely not a mint error. (Reeded coins are ones with the edges with groves. Dime/Quarter/Half dollar/SBA and large $1.00 coins.) Hope this helps.

I know its out of alignment, but is it possible to be part of a die clash? It almost looks like part of the Memorial pillars.

Nope...impossible.

A die clash affects the highest parts of the die first, thus the field. In order to affect the back of the head like that, the remainder of the clash would show VERY boldly in the field.

Your coin has the result of a hard hit on it...nothing else.
