Looks like a possible double date and/or D over D. Can this be cleaned safely. What would you do?

I've only cleaned a coin once, only because it was a Steel Penny which I wanted to clean up since it appeared brown from all the muck. I'd wait for others to respond before doing this, but I used Tarn-x cleaner and just let it sit and GENTLY brushed off the muck with a towel a few times. I'm not sure if this is safe or not but it doesn't appear to have harmed the coin.

I really don't see much hope for the coin. It appears to be a lot of Zinc oxidation and verdigris. It is no use the way it is, so might as well try something. I would try soaking in acetone overnight then seeing if any of the gunk could be loosened very gently with a thorn from a citrus plant.

Then I would soak overnight in xylol and brush lightly with stencil brush - tapping the coin with it.

If you try this, I would be interested in seeing the results!
Rest in Peace

It's too new of a coin to have a D/D. What you're seeing is zinc rot that looks like doubling.

I don't think zinc rot can be stopped once it has started.

Thanks for your input and suggestions. I may as well give it a go and see what happens.

It is a 1996 so there is no way for it to be a RPM. As far as "doubled date"? If you are referring to doubled die, then yes it is possible that a doubled die lies beneath all of that. But if it is something other than dirt and muck, you will never be able to get that off. Also if it were in fact a doubled die in the date area, a coin in that condition would be worth less than a couple of bucks. I say you will not lose anything by clearing it up a bit, but use only 100% acetone.
