Very interesting coin. The upper arm doesn't look struck to me though. It looks like it was cut by hand. Still the coin is doubled struck in the area of the head and shield. I like these ancient error coins.

Always impressive these 'big fellas'.
I like the double struck sestertii for another reason too. Many that I see appear to have the second strike in alignment on both sides. It is hard to tell in this instance due to what might be some tooling on the obverse.
But if the second strike aligns on both sides does it not imply that it was the coin which moved and both dies remained fixed in place ?
If the dies remained fixed does it not imply a type of mechanism was used to mint the coin ?

I have said it all before and will not bore everyone again. But this type of sestertius implies to me a method of mass production where the planchet is placed inside a type of press which opens and closes as blanks are pushed out while another is placed between.

Anyways .......

I am wondering if this coin was not once afflicted by BD and some obverse tooling done to smooth out the scars left behind ?
Still an impressive piece and the Roma reverse is delightful. The cuirass on which Roma sits is especially nice. Roma herself looks ...... well fed !
