Hi Everyone,
I received an email Sunday from The Canadian Numismatic Company who are selling a nice sized group of coins with eye appeal. It seems like an interesting idea on their part, as I have never seen a sale of this sort. Anyhow, just wondering if anyone else has checked out the sale, and curious about your opinions on whether the prices appear reasonable and whether any coins seem to stand out as bargains. Also curious about your thoughts on the eye appeal of the coins, since the 1949 half dollar (purplish in colour) appears to look a little too good to be true toning. I look forward to your replies. Thanks!

These coins appear to be from the Hugues Gervais collection.

Quick correction, the 1945 half dollar in this sale has toning that looks a little too good to be true

I just looked at the first page and coins seem to look very nice, but good luck in finding a buyer at those prices.
When will these dealers learn that the high end buyer of Canadian coins (at these prices) has completely vanished from the face of the earth.
In regards to the Hugues Gervais Collection of coins, let's just say personally, I've always had my doubts in regards to the 'originality' of all those wonderfully coloured coins that when you examine them together, look extremely similar in appearance and not just quite 'right'.

Most are from Hugues' collection. But the prices are too close to trends/above trends. They were on ebay at some point and had a "make an offer" option.

I have made some purchases from them over the years but have always been perplexed as to where some of their pricing comes from ---recent examples are catalogues they mailed out a few weeks with coins they have for sale. I cant find a reference for some of the MS66's they have listed that are same as a few I have, so sure hope they are right.

Thank you for the replies...it does seem a bit odd that so many coins in unison have such amazing toning...a number of the coins have toning unlike anything I have ever seen...I read an article on the forum a few months ago which spoke about methods of artificial toning and until then had no idea you could even artificially tone a coin...it would be interesting to ask the owner about these coins and he came to have so many in his possession...does anyone here know the owner and whether he is a forum member?

Hi guys, I am HuguesGervais and just joined the forum.
I am a collector who buy and sell coins and with the profit increase my collection. I mostly (>95%) buy toned coins.
Personally, I cannot confirm if any coin I bought or sold were AT before I acquire it, but I can confirm 100% that I didn't toned any coin. I never AT, dip or alter coin.
@twoods I mostly buy toned coins. And when I get unintesresting toning or white coin, I normally sell quick/cheap so what I have left for sell are only the best which I ask good price for it.
@doubleeagle59 I mostly buy and sell toned coins. In most auction I will bid on toned coin and have to pay top price in some case which impose higher selling price.

HuguesGervais Glad to hear your side of the story, your toned coins have come up a number of times on this forum. Are the coins in the TCNC auction yours?

Thanks. Yes they are. That's why I have none on ebay right now. They have a much larger customer base and trying to see if it can sell better. Will know in couple of months. Here a link of some of my best toned coins (most not for sale). https://hugues-gervais.smugmug.com/.../Best-Coins/The very nice $1 1938, PCGS will not grade it because of toning. I bought it in a ICCS holder and thinking maybe PCGS will grade higher but no luck. Personally, the coin look naturally toned and some other dealer agreed but PCGS has the last word. So PCGS is more strict on toning than ICCS. The 1963 and 1959 (1st and 2nd row) look suspicious. I sold the 1963 but still kept the 1959. When toning is the same colour and uniform, it's maybe someone who accelerate the toning (extra heat, sun...). Same for the 25c 1950 but still like the coin. PCGS didn't grade the nice $1 1936 (bleu) and I don't understand why. Toning look real but maybe I am not expert enough :-) My photo technic (no photoshop) help to really show the colour. It need to be taken in a dark room with one single source of light and control the angle to remove the holder reflection.
