I have noticed that some PCGS slabbed coins have a series and coin number listed on the label, while most do not. I searched the PCGS website for an explanation, but came up empty. Was it something that was done in the past? Was it a special service? Thanks for reading.

Here's a quote from Conder101:

Quote:
PCGS first began using the Coin and Series numbers in Dec 1998 on the PCGS 8 slab. Those had the serial number on the back label. The first one that Steve199 shows is PCGS 13 that they stated using in 2002 when the barcode returned to the front label (Coin and Series numbers first appeared in Dec 1998). The one on the right is probably a PCGS 21 that they started using in 2006. when they dropped the Coin and Series numbers because no one outside of PCGS was bothering to use them. (They still use them internally) There were two other generations of slabs for circulation coins between PCGS 13 and 21 (PCGS 16 and 19) but they involved changes in the hologram on the back of the slab. (The other numbers between 13 and 21 are for slab varieties used for Eagles and multi-coin holders.)

I liked having the coin and series numbers on there... I wish they still did it, it made it easier for this OCD kid to keep things organized... I mentioned it on another thread earlier today, but I wish PCGS would buy out SEGS and start utilizing their slabs... it would be awesome to have a top view slab the same size as the current PCGS slabs... ANACS is just too big and awkward...
Rest in Peace

An interesting read. Good research explaining some of the changes which we sometimes misunderstand.

What do those numbers referance exactly though? Are they internal numerical codes or from the Red Book or what? I should know this but I don't and have always wondered when I see those millennium era slabs
