Decided to check out an estate sell close to my college before classes start today. When I got in, there was a line of about 8 people looking at the coins, and when it was finally my turn, I was shocked. There were a total of about 40 Carson city silver dollar in their plastic boxes from the mint with a tag of $450 each except for one year which was $650. Next to it was a box of proof sets which I happily looked over and picked some candy out of the jar for $76 total; I will post pictures when I get home. Were the Morgans overpriced? I saw some of the exact same year on ebay sell for $200. Edited by Hello There 01/28/2016 12:35 pm

Without knowing the dates or grades it is virtually impossible to tell if those prices were high or low or average. Did you see any of them sell?

Is there a way to tell if they are the blue or the brown Ikes?

They are Brown Ikes. Brown Ikes are proof in hard plastic holders. Blue Ikes are uncirculated in soft cellophane.

Yes, I'm thinking about opening them, I still need some coins to fill holes. What is the best way to open them without breaking the plastic?

With the older proof sets you are going to break the plastic. They are sealed in spots. I opened my with a utility knife down the seam to weaken it. Some of them opened up rather cleanly, others more jagged. I am not going to lie to you, but opening the 1975, 1976, 1977, and 1979 sets (the ones with the flip over covers) is not going to be fun. Not at all. Just be patient with them.

The common dates for Morgan CC are 82, 83, 84, at $450 common date GSA' s were most likely over priced unless the coin was a MS 65 or higher or DMPL at MS 63 or higher. Any other date GSA CC could be a bargain at $450.

Quote: 2 1976 proof sets one with type 1 and one with type 2 Ike If you really have a 1976 proof set with a type 1 Ike don't break it. The 1976 set only came with the type 2 ike. The 1975 set came with the type 1 ike. Check the date on your set again. (The 75 set has 1975 cent, five cent and dime, and bicentennial quarter half and dollar)

Well... That embarrassing I didn't notice that the bicentennial coins were in both 1975 and 1976 proof sets I made the correction in the list of what I got.
