Here it is. I sent it to ICCS and they sent it back as "obverse 1" VG10 I asked Brian why and he said they don't recognize this variety and its either Obverse 1 or 2. So I cut it open and put it in the pile for CCCS.

Yes, that is one of the 3 types of 2/1a 1882's. The type 1 has no doubling, the type 2 has minor doubling in Canada and Regina/Gratia as well as heavy denticle doubling between Canada and Victoria, and the type 3 has heavy well-offset doubling in Canada and Regina. Yours is the very scarce type 3 and a nice coin. ICCS won't cert any variuety unless it's in the front of Charlton

Yeah, that's a shame. In VG10 it has a trend of $500. But I want it to be properly identified by a 3rd party service before I go to sell it.

Hard to explain.... In the past I was told that PCGS would not grade a large cent with a clear lacquer on it. Many of my choice large cents came that way and I then hesitated to send them down. Now they accept a darker and very obvious coating applied that alters the appearance. I don't get it.... I guess that PCGS is drastically changing their rules..

I am not aware of any PCGS rule changes.
They are very strict with large cents, and whatever alterations you speak of, have never been accepted.

It certainly looks like a candidate for restoration. What do you think you could do with that one, C-V?

Came back as the same grade as when I had it in an ICCS holder. But at least CCCS recognises the variety. And of course your restoration job made it look 100x better! Good stuff CV

Many collectors would have a second definition for a "restoration" like this. You were, however, able to convert the coin into something that can nicely display the attributes of that scarce variety. Sometimes a person just has to do something to rescue something.

I agree that this was a "rescue". The variety is now beautifully visible and the coin is hardslabbed for future generations of enjoyment.
