I think Dansco has me chasing a coin that doesn't even exist! Is there such a thing as an 1834 small 8 small stars variety, if there is I can't find one.

1834: 8 can be small or large, stars can be small or large, and lettering is medium or large. 1835 has Newcomb #'s 1/2 (small 8/lg. stars/med. let), 3/4 (large 8/small stars/med. let), 5 (lg/lg/med), 6 (lg/lg/lg); 7 is also lg/lg/lg, but proof only.
Note: Noyes refers to the lettering as "small" instead of "medium", just to further complicate the situation.
I've never seen a small 8 / small stars 1834.
Small 8 / small stars does exist for 1835 (Newcomb #'s 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 11, 12, 13, and 18.)

Dansco's list of 1839 varieties is also infamously confusing - there's a list of almost all the main varieties and a plain "1839" hole. Fortunately there's one big variety they missed (Head of 1836, aka the 1839/6 overdate), and some have put one of these in the plain date hole. It's about the worst fit for that hole, sure, but there's nowhere else to put it anyway.

Yeah I'm considering the plain 1839 hole to be the 39/6.
But back to the topic, I'm convinced it's a misprint in the album and instead of Sm. 8 & stars med. ltrs., it should be Lg. 8 & stars med. ltrs...that will fix it.
There are three large 8 versions and one small 8 version, so I think it's a simple typo.

It's a misprint. I inked over mine to correct it as edweather said. That album is tough, good luck.

I bought this same album a few months back. I will have to remember to put a new label on that hole.
I bought this album, just to have place to put the large cents I had sitting in a 2X2 box. I think I have 26 holes filled .... I too think I will have a very hard time filling it.

62 in mine. Mostly low grade problem free, except when I get into the tougher ones, then a few problems appear ..and missing all three large 8 '34s.

Thanks Edweather, that makes sense on the large 8 & stars medium letters and if I ever get a 39/6 it will go in the plain 39 hole. I've got 85 of the 97 needed for this book. Of the 12 needed 5 are on the first page. I've been working on mine for about 15 years and it will probably be a least that again, if ever before I get all three 1793's, 1799 and 1804. I do have both 57's, got them out of the way a long time ago. I just bought an 1830 medium letters, that's a tough coin on a tight budget My other 7 are nothing major so I should have them wrapped up by the end of the year then I'll start upgrading some of the rattier specimens....

What about the plain 1834 hole on page 3? And why on earth are the holes for the collar struck large cents so large? These later coins should all be the same size and the hole should fit them.

They probably just made one page size for the large cents and then printed the date information on the front of the pages other than have three different pages for the large cents, one with large holes, one with small holes, and a page with mixed large and small. They just went with the one page with large holes because everything would fit in it even though the later dates would be loose.
If they had three different type pages, they'd have to track them to make sure they were over printed with the wrong dates. And since visually the blank pages would be most identical errors in printing would be quite common, resulting in many wasted pages.
