I have one and used it on coins that have excessive crud on the it.

There was a thread about it earlier where the results were alright, any dirt was completely removed but any type of toning or reacted surfaces remained untouched.
That comment I would agree with.

I do not see any issues with using a plastic tray to place the coin in its distilled water bath. Unless their exist photos to prove otherwise that a "burn" does happen to the coin.
I clean the coins for 30 minutes in distilled water. Let the ultrasonic cleaner cool down, I dry the coin on 100% cotton cloth, I then inspect the coin through a loupe, and change the distilled water, if another cleaning cycle is required. I would then turn the coin over and place it on the tray. Some people would recommend adding a little dish soap or a type of cleaning agent, I do not.
There are videos on coin cleaning with ultrasonic cleaners on youtube to remove the crude. You can see their results.
I believe I paid $46.00 for mine, with plastic basket and watch holder option.
Edited here: A great existing thread here on coin community displaying the before and after results,
