My CCF education made me aware of a potential find when I came across this large (38mm) bronze medal So Called Dollars (SCD) in the dealers $15 bin during my local show today.

Purchased at a hopeful bargain for $10 ... then a bit of research when I came home ... I'm way from an expert on these SCD but Google helps indeed!

Circulated to the XF range ... and a bit beat up on the rims ... particularly on the reverse ... lovely chocolate brown color.

My limited research tells me this medal is neither rare or common ... mid-range at R-6.

Also learned that 13 States issued SCD for funding in advance of the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition ... and that three other States share the same obverse (South Carolina, North Carolina and Kentucky).

It's always great fun to leverage limited knowledge ... Thank you CCF ... and indeed great fun to acquire this example of our USA coinage/medal history.

No doubt a good purchase for $10 ... and now I am even a more knowledgeable collector as a result of this unexpected find.

Enjoy - David

There are many interesting designs in these SCD. I'm sure there are members here that can post a few.

Would look awfully nice next to the fifty cent classic silver commemorative.

Nice pickup at a nice price!

The Pan-Pac Intl Expo is a popular collecting area and these "Fund Dollars" are pursued by many collectors as a subset of all the medals available. Several are fairly easy to find - Montana, Louisiana and South Carolina all come to mind - but others are more elusive.

I've been looking for some time for the one from North Carolina (HK-410) but haven't had any luck yet!
