Despite my membership nickname, I don't do too much with this series. I was looking through a small hoard today of long ago stashed coins and ended up with this. As soon as I saw it I got all excited. Obviously there's a strong spread double date. When I got home I got on the internet and found out there are a lot of DOUBLED DIES in the Shield nickel Series. This happens to be a very nice coin, lots of detail. I manipulated the image to best show the details in grayscale with a touch of sharpening. None of the FOUR 1876 DDO or the TDO 's I have found searching info, show or mention anything about the date being doubled.
Points to see doubling is obviously on the date. The verticle lines in the shield go further up into the horizontal lines. There is obvious doubling of the circle under the cross and some lettering on the legend, especially the R in the TRUST.
Has anyone seen this one before? I was really hopeful I had found something extraordinary but maybe not, now that I learned that doubled dies are plentiful for this series, the air has left my baloon a bit deflated.
Thanks for looking *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

Could we see close ups of the areas you believe show doubling?

If you click on my picture ... it gets larger. I tried to take better pics but not much luck. Maybe when I remove it and put in a better holder I'll take some when it is out of the 2x2. Maybe you missed this in the first post. Thanks for looking. Quote: Points to see doubling is obviously on the date. The verticle lines in the shield go further up into the horizontal lines. The whole thing looks doubled to me. Date, leaves, shield, cross, motto, all the way around.

The date is puched into the die AFTER the die is made so it has nothing to do with whether or not the die is a DDO or TDO. That having been said this is a strong DDO. The doubling of the date does appear to be from Machine Doubling and not from being repunched.

Thanks everyone. The images are taken through the window of a 2x2. At some point, I am going to get it out and take better pictures. I will update with them. Odd that the date caught my eye first and then I found the doubled die situation afterwards. Had it not been for the date, ( Machine Doubling or not) I would have missed it. There are many doubled die Shield nickels from what I am learning, so at least I can be glad it's a strong one. In this case, the Machine Doubling on the date sure doesn't hurt anything. While it may not be a doubled date variety, this might be one exception where MD might just add to it's allure.

According to the books what kind of premium should this one bring in light of the xtra MD piece compared to one w/o the DDO etc.?

I don't think "the book" would give any coin a premium with Machine Doubling but personally, I think ( in this case ) it adds to the desirability of having it. Well, I'm glad it looks this way, and that's all that counts, I guess. I think it grades XF and that's my guess too.
