It looks like a PL strike, but those decisions are best made with the coin in hand...

well that would be pretty special wouldnt it? I have found no record of NSF PLs accept for the ICCS pop report. what would this be worth in say PL63 or PL62?

Note that 1953 NSF coins that were placed in early PL sets were probably specimen strikes...

A nice Mint State coin. 1953 NSS Specimen dollars are rare. According to Sandy Campbell he purchased four original sets from one source in 1980 that were all Specimen strikes issued in red leather boxes. He went on to say that he had only seen three or four other sets in 30 years and some had switched out coins. Mint State coins inserted for the Specimens. He further stated that many grading companies still get this wrong(1953 NSS PL) but PCGS does not anymore.

I highly doubt this a Specimen coin. Looks like an early circulation strike that was handled with some care. Best way to find out is send it to ICCS. One of the sets alluded to above ended up with a very good friend of mine and this coin posted looks nothing like a Specimen. Good Luck .

I have always had difficulties with 1953's.
I will say though, every time I have one that I think could be a PL or SP, always turns out to be a nice looking MS coin.
I suspect this is what you'll find with yours.

thanks for all the help and opinions so far..maybe I can post pics the quarter and half, they are nice too but I dont think their strikes are strong enough to be better than nice mirror UNCs

Try using reflected light for toning photos... have you browsed the coin photography sub-forum here at CCF? Lots of excellent photographers contribute to that sub-forum.
