I was browsing the US Mint's web site and I noticed the Mark Twain silver dollar proof was priced at $45.95 and the uncirculated dollar was $44.95. I'm curious, wouldn't the proof coin for an extra buck be the better value? Your thoughts would be much appreciated.

Without knowing the mintages Ill bet the uncirculated has a much lower mintage than the proof.

Value, or appeal is in the eye of the beholder. There is a significant difference the look of the 2 coins finishes Proof should be super shiny, while uncirculated would be more matte.

Some collectors only choose one or the other, not both.

It is too early to say what is the better value.

Buy what pleases you let the speculators worry about the 'best value'.

Now that would make sense moxking. But it is hard for me to understand why they would mint more proofs than uncirculated. I guess they would if they anticipated the populous desire for the proofs.

None would be a better value, 40 bucks for a 1oz coin worth no more than $15 melt value. But if you like any of them go for it.

Just look at past montages. Uncirculated is always a fraction of the proofs produced. Because that's how they sell.

Proofs always outsell unc. They are flashier and appeal to more people. The MT proof is going to be no exception. But..if there turns out to be relatively few uncirculateds sold (like below 30k) they will likely be worth more down the road.

With a combined mintage of 350k I can't see 30k in the picture at all...maybe 225k-125k if they sell that many

These will be on sale for quite awhile and when, in a month, the set price increases by $5 sales will slow down to a crawl

Buy 'em to collect...nice looking coin....but do not buy anticipating a later profit

My opinion only

I don't see 30k either. Just suggesting that would be what it would take for the MS to be worth a significant amount in the future.

What I have noticed this time is more people saying they have bought one of each. Two days ago I figured we would be at 3:1, maybe even 4:1 due to the new proof process.
