Note that the rims on the 1973, 1974, and 1977 nickel dollars are considerably wider than other years. In 1975 the obverse rim is very wide - I think in part, those wide rims protect the coin somewhat, because those same years are easy to get gem MS-65 grades.
Study the photos here of the rims on various coins, all business strikes. The same master punches are basically used for the dies that created specimen and PL strikes.
