I recently bought this dollar SP-67 1972. I compare this 1972 with a 1975 dollar. The queen design is different but my question is about the rim. The 1972 have a thinner rim. Is it regular on a Specimen strike or a PL strike?

Thanks

It is normal. PL and specimen coins don't always have wider rims, it's mostly an optical illusion due to the superior quality of strike and newer dies where the rims are more squared off and filled making them appear wider.

Note that the rims on the 1973, 1974, and 1977 nickel dollars are considerably wider than other years. In 1975 the obverse rim is very wide - I think in part, those wide rims protect the coin somewhat, because those same years are easy to get gem MS-65 grades.

Study the photos here of the rims on various coins, all business strikes. The same master punches are basically used for the dies that created specimen and PL strikes.

If we stay in NCLT strike for the year 1972, the rim on PL and Sp will be the same and just the quality of the strike change. Any other clues can be used to seperate Pl and Sp strike for a same year?

Thanks
