I sold a coin and shipped on 1/12, and fell off radar on 1/14. Have been in contact with buyer and USPS several times. Called ebay and they said that I won't be penalized for a USPS error, so that was a relief. I'm thinking that ebay must have some sort of deal with the USPS for lost/late/undelivered packages, to recoup losses. I don't sell that much, but seem to have lousy luck with the USPS.
Rest in Peace

Not much that can be done. Calling rarely helps. Patience is the only thing you really can exercise. I've never lost a U.S. shipped package in the tens of thousands I've sent. But I have had delay issues, especially in the last two years.

Well exactly. It's out of my hands. The PO will deliver eventually, just a matter of how long the buyer can wait. So if buyer gets refund from ebay, and then gets coin delivered, does ebay take money back from buyer?

Over 3 weeks off radar. Seller has patience of a saint so far. Even though ebay says I won't be penalized for USPS error, will believe it when I see it. Not too worried though, just waiting.

Although they won't penalize your account as in ratings and such, if it goes to a case, you will have to pay the money...

Hummm.....well then, I guess they lied to me, because they said I wouldn't have to pay the money if the PO lost the package, because I didn't do anything wrong. I thought it was too good to be true, but it makes sense. Why should seller have to pay if USPS loses package? So what happens if buyer gets refund, then USPS delivers package? They get money back and keep coin too, and I'm out coin? It seems if the package gets delivered after buyer is refunded, ebay should then be able to take back refund and apply back to seller.

Do you insure every ebay item you ship? Not practical.

Unfortunately, yes.

Luckily, domestically, packages very rarely go missing but sometimes they do... If the tracking does not show delivery, buyer opens a case, ebay will take the money out of your account and refund buyer...

If you start shipping out a ton of packages, you are occasionally going to have a lost or seriously delayed (to the point of where it appears lost) that you will have to pay for out of pocket...

Think of it as a cost of doing business, just like a coin store owner or show dealer may have to deal with the occasional shop lifter...

I only insure stuff that I send priority mail. I never sell anything over $100 so I never really even have to think about it.

Yeah, I'm pretty much resigned to the fact I'll have to pay up, and hopefully it will get delivered, and the buyer will pay me back. I've been on the buyer end a couple of times, and seller refunded, package arrived, and I repaid them. Still seems that ebay should do the refunding and then get money back from USPS. As much business as ebay steers the USPS' way, you'd think there would be some sort of deal like this between them. USPS loses package, and I pay for it, humm..... something's wrong with that picture.

Ed, unless the tracking says "delivered" then ebay will not penalize you period. That is what they go by. It's pretty cut and dry. I wouldn't worry too much about it. If he gets it great, if he doesn't and tracking confirms that ebay absorbs and writes off the $ by refunding the seller and letting you keep the initial purchase price

Well, that is good news. That's what I thought ebay told me the first time I called them about it, but the second time I called them, they told me something different. Thanks for the encouragement. I think care more about my buyers, than they care about themselves. Have to stop doing that Have had buyers refund me personally for packages not delivered, but that's just wrong imo. The buyer should go through ebay to keep things above board and documented properly. I've already suggested to this buyer that he open a case if it doesn't show up this week.

You'll always have to think about the possibility, that a parcel fallen under the radar might never re-appear online or on records, even if it was properly delivered. At least this is what happened to me.

1.5 yrs ago I placed an order for a couple of board games from an online store in US. The parcel was dispatched via USPS and I received the tracking number. After few days, I saw the parcel moving from Pennsylvania to New York, but then ... nothing ... after few weeks looking at USPS tracking, stating that my parcel is still in New York, I contacted the seller. They did magnificent job, contacted USPS, who confirmed that they have no clue where the parcel might be - no records, no sign of the parcel etc. Seller promised a full refund if I did not receive the parcel in two more weeks.

Of course, I did tracking number checks every day, from both USPS website and Finnish post website, if the parcel would appear somewhere. But nothing. After waiting additional couple or so weeks, I suddenly received a notification of a parcel, went to my local post office and there the parcel was, all intact, everything perfectly OK. Funny thing was, USPS never got information where the parcel was, or if it was delivered. Same thing with Finnish post office, not a single record available, though they were able to deliver it.

Now, if I was a dishonest person I could've easily told the seller that I have received nothing, and I would have had full refund. But that's not me, I emailed seller immediately after getting the parcel and they, too, were relieved. Plus I got a huge thanks for being honest, as they also realized I could've easily taken the parcel AND full refund.
