Hi all, For a while, I've been thinking about selling part of my coin and banknote collection. Now, considering that the collection we're talking about is Soviet Union coin and banknote collection and these are highly under-valued in my country, Finland - in effect, taking these to a local dealer is out of question. My next bet would probably be ebay, though I am not sure after reading all the horror stories of ebay always siding with buyers. But still, I kinda think that this would be the way to go. Then, from you guys, I'd like to ask advice on how to sell a collection, what would be the best way of dividing everything into reasonable and most lucrative lots? Selling one by one to me sounds very cumbersome (we're talking about 500+ coins and around 60 banknotes) and I'd hate to see losing all the good pieces and being stuck with all the 'cheap' stuff. Should I consider selling by dividing by denomination (lot of 1 kopeks, another of 2 kopeks ...etc), or should I consider going further? Your insight would be highly appreciated. -JJ-

Would it be possible to sell selected parts of your collection on consignment for direct sale, or consignment to auction, via a dealer or auctioneer in the U.K. or the U.S.?
Such a transaction could be started with an email or 'phone call.

The only way to assure this doesn't happen is to sell them in lots which include 'good" and 'cheap' pieces. Generally, this will cause many buyers that want 'good' pieces to pass up your listings, or cause you to get lower bids than you might otherwise get. You might want to sell the 'good' pieces individually, and bundle the 'cheap' stuff together in lots. No guarantee anyone will buy the 'cheap' stuff, but it will help you get the best price for the 'good' pieces.

If you haven't taken your collection to any dealers in Finland, you can't be sure that they would offer you to little. The fastest way to sell them would be as a single collection and I would suggest taking them in and offering them to your local coin shops first. You don't have to take what they offer you, but it would be a base price for you to work from. If you are talking about a goodly number of better coins (those that would sell for at least $25US each) ebay might be an alternative. However, remember that ebay is very time intensive. You have to write the ad, shoot the photos, answer questions, hope you sell the item, pay Pay Pal and ebay their vig, wrap the packages, ship the packages, hope they arrive, hope the coins are not returned. The more expensive your average coin value, the better it is to use ebay. If your 500 coins and 60 notes are only worth an average of $5 each (the actual selling prices, not some price list), or $2800, you would do well to consider selling them to a single buyer who would pay you a fair percentage of that amount. If your coins and notes are worth an average of $25 or more, than ebay is worth the time.

Moxking - sorry to say, but according to my experience, my local coin dealers are interested in Finnish coins only. World coins are frowned upon and if they buy them, they'll offer 25-30% of Krause value for them, at maximum. As we all know, especially for USSR coins Krause is pretty much useless, from valuation point of view.
Nah, I'll rather dump my collection into the sea, than offer it to any local dealer :D
The average value - oh boy, that's another story. Late USSR coins (most of them) are pretty much worthless, by worthless I mean few $ per kilo, even in nice condition. Some earlier ones carry more premium. This is why I am kinda worried to sell in parts, since I would most likely just lose the good ones and be stuck with 'worthless' brass junk. In that sense, I would not mind selling whole collection to a single buyer.

There are a couple of Buy Sell Trade forums on this site, and you already had interest from a member in this thread. So maybe selling them here is a good place to start. ebay is another suggestion. Yeah, it's a bit labor intensive, but I don't really mind that part. It's a labor of love, and can be fun making listings and selling stuff. I wouldn't worry too much about the "worthless junk." Worthless junk, is just that, worthless junk. Sell the good stuff for as much as you can get.

Edweather - too bad I have long way to go before I can post to the trade forum. Remember, one needs 250 posts first! I did send a message to the interested member, we'll see how that should turn out.
Looks like I am somewhat emotionally attached to my SU coins - though I know the worthless junk is just that, I felt like I should be able sell them too. You comment kinda opened my eyes and yes, maybe I should consider just selling the good ones and see how things turn out, concerning the 'junk'...

Could you consign or sell to a Russian dealer? Mass/Volume/Value what about a trip to Moscow?
