I'm hoping someone on here can provide some additional information or at least direct me to someone that can on a Douglas 51 Chicago Commemoration medal.

I was going through my grandfathers tool box and found this medal. I was really confused because the metal is very soft. It is very easy to bend the Medal. I found some information on this website:
http://www.coins.nd.edu/WashToken/W...xt/1889.html

It states: "Apparently several varieties were also issued in a very soft pot metal that could be easily bent and thus do not survive. Rulau and Fuld suspect other varieties may have been struck in this soft metal and no longer exist."

The variance from any known examples are the soft metal and the phrase "PERU, ILLS.COMMEMORATION" on the reverse.

Do I have something special and possibly valuable here?

Thanks for any and all input.

Jeff

to the Community.

It looks like yours may be Douglas 51E from the information on the link you provided.

Let me send an email to someone that deals in this area and see what he says. It may take a few days for him to get back to me.

MV, thanks for the reply. I'm looking forward to the response you receive. I'm in no real hurry, I actually found it around Christmas and finally decided to do the research on it after it sat on my desk for over a month. When I first looked at that link, I also thought it might be a Douglas 51E. But that should be white metal and they list the wording as:
PERU ILL COMMEMORATION (Douglas 51E)

This one is a soft metal and the wording is a little different. There is an "S." after the ILL so it reads:
PERU,ILLS.COMMEMORATION
instead of
PERU ILL COMMEMORATION (Douglas 51E)

Looking forward to someone providing some insight into this.

I also placed an order for a copy of Medallic Portraits of Washington 2nd edition by Rulau and George Fuld. I was able to find a copy cheap and I had some cash left on an Amazon gift card so I thought why not purchase it.

I heard back from Joe yesterday, he stated:

Quote:
This is a rare medal - but not as rare as the book would make you believe. Instead of 2 known, there are probably 8-10 known. I have one advanced collector who has accumulated three of them.

Subject to inspection, I would pay $200 +/- for this piece.

MV,

Thanks for the e-mail, but I think your friend is thinking this is a Douglas 51E which is isn't. This is not the white metal that the others are listed as. This is a very soft metal and the wording is different than the Douglas 51E.
There is an "S." after the ILL so it reads:
PERU,ILLS.COMMEMORATION
instead of
PERU ILL COMMEMORATION (Douglas 51E)

Thanks for all your help.

The book arrived today---it is indeed Douglas 51E. Whoever transcribed the information in the link accidentally left off the S of the legend Peru, Ills. Commemoration.

I also think pot metal is another word for white metal https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pot_metal
