...but it looks like one!
This coin was struck at Ibiza island under the rule of Philip II of Spain (1.556-1.598); Itīs a "Dobler" (double dinero).
After the ancient age, when the island was a very rich trade emporium due to his location as waypoint in the commercial route between Africa and Europe and the route between Italy and Spain, with a small silver mine indeed; the island lost his wealth with the fall of the roman empire and the decline of the commerce at the mediterranean sea.
With the muslims the island lives another "good times" period as a neccesary naval base for slavery (the slaves were captured among the cristian peoples of Spain and southern Europe and were sold in Africa).
After the conquer by the kingdom of Aragon in 1235 the island was in a "commercial dead road", and felt in an economic great crisis.
By the time of Philip II, the industry of the island was reduced to the salt explotaition as the only relevant source of money.
these crude coins were made to fill the low local commerce needs...

Cool coin...not a joke, but it makes me smile. Crude but lovable. It's remarkable that, at a time during which great masterpieces were being produced throughout Europe - as the artistic transition from the Renaissance through Mannerism and soon on into the Baroque was taking place - that coins such as this could be produced. Very interesting write-up. Thanks for sharing, Athalbert.

that's pretty cool really, almost looks like an imitative camp gate from the end of the LRB period!

here's my favorite "die could have been engraved by a 3rd grader" coin.
