Have been looking at 32-D quarters and wanted to know if the mint marks tend to be unclear/mushy. Is that normal/typical for a 32-D? Thanks.

If the mintmark is nice and clear, it is usually fake. Mushy is normal.

Buying a key date that has been counterfeited for decades is foolish unless it is certified or you become an expert on the coin before you buy it.

Never buy a cleaned 1932 d. I learned that the hard way. It took me months to resell!

The rarest key dates most often should only be purchased from authenticated sources. If you have the utmost trust in a professional dealer who's willing to stake his reputation on selling you an unauthenticated key-date coin, then it is recommended that you still do your research on exactly what to look for in a counterfeit.
The easiest way: Buy professionally graded coins.

I bought my 1932-D and 1932-S raw.
In 1997.
Did not seem like a big deal back then. I got the pair for less than $75.
Today, however, I would probably buy them with much more diligence.

I've got my AU55 32-S but need the 32-D but I'll have to wait until budget permits, all monies I have now have to go towards Buffalo nickels ..... The AU-55 D shown would fit nicely if I could afford right now ..... Wonder what final bid will be?

Not sure. Hopefully under $300 or I probably won't get it. If I don't get the "D", I will look for an "S" which should be a little cheaper.

Over $315 so under $300 ain't happening ...... Maybe next time ...... Kicking myself for not getting 6-7 years ago when I got my 32-S ..... Good luck in your search!

I bought mine ungraded from dealers I trust. Between he and I, I was 99% sure there were for real. I sent them to ANACS to make 100%. The dealers did agree to refund me if ANACS came back and said they were fake. Be sure you have an agreement like that in place if you buy them raw. But without knowing someone you can trust, dont buy raw.

Didn't get that nice toned 32-D. Went for one bid over me at a little over $400. Luckily its not unique!!

Saw a couple VF 35 examples go for $115-$130 range .... But I need an AU55 but was tempted by the low price of VF-35.
