There was a post here over ten years ago inquiring about damage to clad coins that had been stored in old blue Whitman folders for a long time. I've been examining a few of the old Whitman folders that I filled with clad dimes about twenty years ago, and find the same thing: spots of blue-green corrosion and pitting around the edges, where the coins were in contact with the Whitman cardboard. From working with ancient coins I now recognize this as bronze disease, and am very glad there was nothing valuable stored in these Whitman books. The message is: If you've got anything you value in this kind of folder, get it out of there immediately. There are step-by-step instructions available online for treating bronze disease.

I have to wonder - even though I am currently using some - if the same thing will not be found in the future from albums since they also have cardboard touching the sides of the coins.

The Whitmans are cheap and have never claimed archival safe. Go with archival safe, regardless of the brand, and your coins will be fine.

It is what I would expect if the cardboard had been retaining moisture.

I really hate that term used by ancient collectors "bronze disease", it is not a disease, it is just corrosion, i.e. verdigris. While the instructions you may find online for ancient coins may just be fine, it is NOT for modern coinage, unless you desire to remove nearly all numismatic value.

Accurate for sure. The problem is that when I put mine into storage years ago, I had no reason to believe there was enough moisture in the cardboard to cause a problem. I sealed the Whitmans in a manner I felt had to be airtight. But 20 years later the corrosion had taken place. Something like this happening makes me wary to trust my own judgement on any cardboard touching them. I am hoping to eventually have all plastic "albums" I want to make myself.
