On the US Mint website I saw what I thought was just the new Buffalo coin......... They're calling it a "First in the Series" and a "special" new 2008 Buffalo Celebration Coin with different "red" labels and packaging and a Chineese chop mark from Director Choy ?(of Chineese decent)
Is this not just the same Buffalo $50.00 gold piece ? Has anyone else seen this ? It's selling for $1,018.88 too because the "8" is lucky and important in Asian culture!
For Pete's sake ! I paid $800.00 for my 2006 Proof and unless this is a very "special" coin....... I don't think I want the exact same coin marked up with the gold market over $200.00 in only a year and a half ! I know that gold has been going up recently, but I don't know whether to get this coin again simply because it's "repackaged" for Asian people, or because it's "different". So, It's not just that gold has gone up.....for me it's the collector value to it too of course. So is it worth it ? I don't know !
The "exciting new packaging" is not surely going to work like it did with the Presidential dollar craze ?
Anybody to clarify or share their thoughts on this one by the Mint would be appreciated. IS ANYONE GOING TO GET THIS COIN ?

I'm sure the fact that gold has been over $900/ounce several times this year has a lot to do with it.

The fact that you paid $800 two years ago is irrelevant as gold has been over $900/oz lately.

This coin is only special if you are Chinese The number 8 signifies wealth and good luck in Chinese culture and the more 8s the better. This release coincides with the Chinese New Year which rivals Christmas for gift giving. The Chinese are lovers of all things gold and are buying up alot of the bullion Buffaloes so I think the Mint is marketing this for a non-American or Chinese-American audience. Also, the BEP has been doing the Chinese thing with bills for a couple years now.

I just saw it on the Mints website. I'm assumeing that its just the normal Buffalo coin meaning there has been no change to the coin design. But its not all that clear from the description they gave. Anyhow, I think the mint is getting a little to diverse in their offerings. A coin or collection is no longer going to be regarded as unique and valuable because something different and "unique" is being released every other day.

Is anyone going to order this coin ? Or, like me, you already have the 2006 or 2007 and don't want to spend the money on it.
Is anyone going to do a $50.00 gold Buffalo coin collection ?
BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY ........WHO ALL IS GOING TO ORDER THIS COIN ?

p.s. If you go to the "Press Release" section on the US Mint website you'll learn a great deal more about this coin.
