This section is about the coinage of Demarary & Essequibo,which were governed as separate British colonies until 1831,when they united.In 1836,Demarary & Essequibo had its name changed to the Colony of British Guiana.The currency system was based on the Dutch system of 22
Guilders = 1 Joe.The smallest unit was called the Stiver,which is derived from 'Stuiver'.The 'Joe' is derived from the gold 'Johannes',
which was a Portuguese gold coin,which was cut & counterstamped with a '22' to represent 22 Guilders.
