Hi. I am new to this site, first post. I came across what I think is a neat Bicentennial quarter, looked online for some information but am clueless about coin collecting. I think it is neat because the front side has the coloring of a basic quarter, sort of smudged silver, but the back has this goldish tone to it, not like a gold made quarter, but the tinge is just goldish.

I was wondering if this is something unique, but am really interested in if any of you have any ideas as to why it would look like this, I am interested to find out why it happened!

From what I understand, it is from Philadelphia, there is no mint mark, but that is all I really know.

Here are some pictures, the quarter on the left is the one I am asking about. The one on the right is just another Bicentennial quarter for comparison in pictures.
Thank you for any info that you can give!

A lot of coins get electroplated with a thin layer of gold and then sold for a premium. The amount of gold added to the coin is so little that it would cost more to recover than it's worth. So the coin is basically damaged and worth only a quarter.

I think your coin was once gold on both sides but it wore off the obverse side -- I still see a bit remaining.

You can keep it as a curiousity or release it back into the wild.

Keep hunting -- there's still some nice old coins out there that need a good home.

and I agree that it appears plating is worn off.

Looks like you found a silver clad example. They made them on the quarters-halves-dollars that year. Thus the reason it tarnished yellow.

Thank you for the info. I guess that would make sense that the plating wore off. Still neat to look at, and, I learned something new!

Buddy: True. SO this would not be a silver clad. Probably as mentioned earlier a plated clad.
