Can't say that I've seen this before. What's your guess with what's going on with this reverse?

I'm guessing that the missing piece of the banner
was filled with grease when struck.

T, that's my guess as well. Coin does not appear to be counterfeit although I don't have in hand to weigh and measure.

Edit: Just found a certified one on ebay that has the same void in the ribbon so I guess it's okay. Must be grease.

I've got a 1876 quarter from the San Fran mint with the similar missing sections in the banne, leaf buds not connected and numerous die cracks. I'm going with 52Raymo in over polishing. They were probably having to touch the dies up a lot due to high production that year.
