I've seen many coins in slabs that state "questionable color" or called "recolored". And those coins tend to look a little off, but usually pretty close to mint colors.

Just how are these cents recolored so close to red?

I know things like vinegar rip off the outer toning to make copper look like lifeless gold, and sulphur can take coins back to brown - but what is used to get the more natural looking mint color?

Ask greatsoutherncoins or fairviewcoins, both sellers on ebay.

I run into this with Lincolns also. I think they are sometimes dipped and retoned artificially to mask the original dipping. I don't know exactly how this is done but I do come across the two above mentioned ebay sellers often and agree that their coins look off many times.

Less sulfur.

I have certified many, many recolored coppers in PCGS holders. The question is not the chemicals, it's the process...
