I paid about equal amounts for these. Which one would you keep for your type set? 1866 EF with a nice strike but has been lightly cleaned? Or an 1867 AU with no cleaning and a poor strike?

Both! They support each other. Perhaps you may find a better example than either of these, then you can sell them both.

I like the luster on the AU one the other is just so dull from cleaning.

I like the AU one a little more. The reverse is very nice, and luster is always a bonus.

I'd save them both. There are a fair number of dates at affordable prices. Not too many folks with more than a single example as a type. Break the mold.

I'd SELL them both and use the money to buy a well struck XF/AU with original surfaces.

The '67 is the better of the two. Both have been dipped, with the '66 appearing much duller and looks to have been more vigorously cleaned than the '67. The '67 at least still retains some of its luster, so if you had to pick one to keep, I'd go with the '67. If I were seeking a nice, original Shield nickel, I'd pass on both and look for something with more skin &/or luster... and a fuller date. Happy searching, ET

Looks like some green stuff on the obverse of the '67. Maybe an acetone bath would help.

I would keep the 1867 nickel. It has better eye appeal to me. As for the other nickel, if it was my coin I would trade it in for that 42-P proof silver War Nickel I have had my eye on.

But I have a budget of about $50 for this type, and both of these coins meet that requirement. But since I have two eating a hole in my wallet, I need to sell one, and I am debating which one. I like Kanga's idea. I can make a profit on both of the coins, and use that profit to buy a nicer coin for the type. Net free coin. Such is my dilemma.

I love this thread because it shows you beauty is in the eye of the beholder! So many opinions and all of them correct!

I would have to see the two in hand, the pictures distort things too much to make an informed opinion.
