So I've owned one of these in the past and had some time to study it. Most people usually use the beads over II to tell the difference but it can still be difficult at times.
When in doubt try this.
Use the beads over Regina. Specifically GIN. On both small and large beads, there will be a bead above the serrif on the "G" and directly above the first bar of the "N"
The difference is, the small beads variety has 5 beads total here and the large beads has 6 beads.

The real difference is that the socalled Large beads obverse is high relief and the regular small beads is low relief.
The small beads dollars and small bead cents are also low relief. The large bead cents and dollars are high relief as well. Once you have seen a Large beads five cents it stands out like a sore thumb. No mistaken it for any thing else.
