Here is another interesting 1859! To bad about the corrosion... It almost looks like another Triple punch 9 variation? Also the the 5 is also nicely re punched and the C in Cent and the N in One is also doubled

I though I would share

Enjoy!

Beautiful coin. AU 55+.

Haxby variety Obverse 241 / Reverse E 26.

I believe this to be a scarce variety as
I only have 1 and it is a grade lower than yours.

At last count, I think that I had identified at least 9 dies that on offset punch shows mostly on the tail. I don't know how many Dr Haxby has listed. Since every single 1859 working die had the last digit hand-punched into the die and each impression on the die took 2-4 smacks to make the die complete and up to snuff, there are probably 200 different varieties/placements of the visual 9. Each new whack required a rehardening of the punch and annealing(softening) of the die to maximize the impression. The individual whacks may have been hours, days, weeks or months apart. There is no way that every successive whack was placed EXACTLY on top of the old one. So, you could lose count of the differences between 9's on any coin, depending upon the magnification used. Still, a nice coin but I would have no idea as to the scarcity. To me it's nearly vanilla.

True, this variety is rather 'vanilla.' This ensample
is from a rather early die stage as the obverse Die-Cracks
(to the left of the C in CANADA and to the A in REGINA)
appear rather faint (at least as shewn in the photos).

Unfortunately though, Dr. Haxby has not yet posted photos
of the reverse Die-Cracks (to leaves 4 & 7). However, Dr.
Haxby did make reference to these Die-Cracks (within the
yellow grids)on the obverse 241 Home Page and the reverse
E 26 Home Page.

I tried to find the reference to die cracks 4 & 7 last night but now I know why I could not find them (no photo's yet) and as I am still learning I thought it might have been a new variety.
Very nice find viper

In my experience, when referencing Dr. Haxby's site, I find
that perhaps some 97-98 percent of the 59 vickies can easily
and readily be identified by using the current tabs.

Very few (such as this ensample) have fallen through the cracks.
Nevertheless, attribution can normally still be determined, but
we have all been spoiled by the great work Dr. Haxby has already
done. In such cases, we must be patient and dig a little deeper.

So very very true...

Where would our 59 varieties be without "Dr. J"...?
