Hi, just wondering if someone could give a bit of history about this Canadian time period and answer why these quarters were all melted down?

There were no 25¢ pieces minted 1922-1926, nor were there 10¢ or 50¢ pieces issued for those same years.

No need for small change during that time. Huge numbers were made from 1917- 1921.

Wow! Hard to imagine they had enough coins for 5 years back then. Nowadays the mint is cranking out modern coins in the millions and billions. I havent looked at the numbers but I would speculate coins in the pre 1922 era would have received extra wear due to this stoppage. And therefore may be more rare in higher grades?

Pre 1922 King George V pieces in all denominations, besides only a couple of well known key dates (such as the 1921s and to a lesser extent the 1915s), are quite common and easy to get in higher grades. The mintages were very high compared to the Vickies or even Edwards.

You can find a lot of useful information on mintages here:

Also note, they changed from Sterling silver (92.5%) to 80% silver in that time.

In relation to mintage volume, the population of Canada was far less as well.

I wonder if the mint was quietly pulling the older coins out to melt down for the higher content? similar to the modern ARP?
