One very interesting coin which will mystify even the experts.
But I think Okiecoiner may have the answer.

Nice photos of the details, DEVLEC. I can see the circular crack Dr. Haxby refers to in the photos of the lamination area in your first post. The crack comes out of leaf 12 and goes to the tip of leaf 13. Could the missing piece have gotten stuck to the tape that was holding the coin. I imagine you've already checked that. Just thought I'd ask in case you haven't.

Thanks Phil,.. for the added Dr.Haxby info..and yes I checked very carefully for the missing piece.

I also contacted the seller and asked him (by chance) to also have a close look..but I knew that that was next to impossible for such a small piece..and the very sloppy taping of this cent.

It's still a cool coin to have to help fill in some of the on-goings of the mint processes way back then..
