2nd of my 2 ebay finds this week. I think it is at least AU50 maybe higher.

1896-O-Morgan-For-Grading-Please.

1896-O-Morgan-For-Grading-Please.

Whatcha think?

Whatever it is it is my 1st 1896o Morgan and am very happy to have it fill a slot.

What makes this a key date? Is it because of the low mintage?

A "key date" is a generally a first or last mint year produced. I am a novice, and still learning much like yourself. Someone will come along to correct me if I am wrong. This is what I've gathered in my short time of interest in the hobby.

Also, the hazing present around lettering on obverse indicates a cleaning if I'm not mistaken. Grading is definitely not my thing. But it is a nice coin.

To me
A key date is the lowest mintage and/or the highest
value coin in a series.

For Morgan dollars it would be the 1895. But some collectors
do not always include the 1895 as part of the set. Because
it is only available in part of the 880 proof coins that
were minted that year. No business strikes are known.

So the next key date would fall to the 1893 S Morgan.

There are many semi-key dates in the Morgan series, mostly
because of lower mintage or lower number known to exist.
And because of the higher price they trade at, over common
date Morgan's.

the 1896 O is considered a conditional rarity. Meaning there
are fewer known in higher grade, so in the higher grades they
trade at a higher price. But they are somewhat more common
in lower grades.

As for your coin I too would be around XF cleaned.

Sorry but you have a harshly cleaned heavily marked coin. This date is a grade rarity. So if it Fills a hole at a bargain price and makes YOU happy that is all that matters. Have fun with the hobby.
As an aside you can buy one like yours for 35 to 50 bucks and could look long and hard to find a high end MS 64 @ $45 grand. Few were saved and no hoards came out of the Treasury hoards of the 1960s.

Due to all the marks and being cleaned I would give it a grade of VF-35.

Thanks Guys. And Ty Pacific for price range on coin....means I didn't get taken. I did spend a little more than my usual $30 limit for ungraded ebay coins. So if fell right in the correct price range...whew!
