I have basically the same setup, except for I have an iPhone 6S but it's not a plus... Anyways, I'm eying about the same results. While they pictures are okay, I too am wondering where to go from here.

rking007, could you provide a photo of the setup for the shots of the Lincoln Cent? Thanks, Hamm.

Sure Ham! I'll throw it up here tomorrow morning. No laughing at my setup though!

Okay, here we go. So some more details about my process too... - Each IKEA Jansjo light has 2 sheets of Rosco Light Tough Spun folded in half for four levels of diffusion (I'm a videographer and have sheets of the stuff) - The glass is my main 'tripod' and then I stick opened unused coin flips under the phone to 'micro' adjust for focus - The white card sits on top of three Whitman folders - mainly to get the height I need for the focus rather than trying to find a shorter glass - I zoom in on the phone 2x and then shoot. For editing, I just use the forums editor - crop, +10 contrast and no sharpening so I don't increase the compression artifacting. I don't use any color editing at all as I feel the white card is doing a pretty good job of holding the white balance

Thanks rking007. Interesting setup with excellent results. I will have to try your idea when I can get some of the Rosco Light Touch spun. Hamm

try raising the coin about 1/2" off the paper (rest it on a cork or other soft object). you will get more focus on the coin and not the background. with the back ground washed out its also a lot easier to fill in shadows/background etc.
I also never zoom, you're just expanding the size of the pixels and not getting a true higher resolution image. shoot and crop to size after.
might also try different colored backgrounds, I've had good success with coppers using black instead of white.

I have been struggling with photos myself. Found some good, quick, and easy tips via this thread. Thanks!

Wade, thanks for the ideas! I just browsed your photo catalog and I will be trying black for sure next.
Ham, the light tough spun is good but I feel like I could be using something with a little more diffusion too. I bet the tissue paper you use for presents or something along those lines would work well but the only problem with that is how easy it is to tear. The tough spun is literally like a fabric and looks like a super dense spiderweb. You can order it online but if you're going to do that you may as well look at other diffusion products from Rosco too.
