I am looking to buy a 1918-d 8/7 Buffalo nickel. I see that just from Red Book the prices above Fine condition really start to sky rocket. However, what would be a good current price for one of these coins in F or VF condition that is graded and slabbed? Where is the value for the money? I see the prices for VF at around $5000 and Unc. from $30,000 to $50,000. Where is the sweet spot for this coin if there is one? Most of my set is in the VF grade.
Rest in Peace

For the kind of money you need to spend on a nice one you really should stay at a VF-20 or above if you can afford to.

$4200-$4600 is the probable range for a no problem PCGS or NGC at that grade.

I would recommend Heritage over ebay for this type of coin. Rare coins can sometimes be had at heritage, even with their vig, that's lower than ebay.

Or better yet, shop a major show.

That particular Buffalo is a monster. don't mess around with e-bay , try as mentioned a large show or large reputable coin stores . and IMHO don't settle for a details coin , and don't pull the trigger unless your 100% happy with it.

It is a tuff coin to find in a grade where you can see the 7. Keep away from places like ebay for that 0ne. Regardless of the price, just make sure it is authenticated.

Speaking from experience with this one it's certainly an easy one to identify. I bought a raw one on ebay for $900 and it PCGS slabbed as a problem free F-12. Maybe I was an exception, but if you know your buffs well, it's fairly easy (with some exceptions) to detect issues with a coin that would result in a "problem" outcome from the TPG's. To the knowledgeable collector, ebay is the biggest and one of the best sources for collectible coins. Just sticking in my 2¢ (or in this case 5¢). PG
