Any thoughts about this coin (i.e. grade, surface preservation, eye appeal, worthiness of sending to TPG, etc.) would be appreciated.

I am concerned it may be cleaned because in-person the luster is sort of muted and doesn't have a strong cartwheel luster (I'm not sure whether this is a characteristic of the series or not)

To my eye, this looks like a match for the BF-1 variety. http://doubledimes.com/1875P-Summary.html

Grade wise I'm comfortable saying this is at least AU-58.

I think the surfaces are naturally toned which has muted the luster....others may disagree with me on this.

I'd be curious to know how a TPG would grade this double dime.

My first thought was "Wow"! That baby was struck by one fresh and heavy hammer die.

IMHO. AU-58 fits, but I suspect it'll get a details grade. This is a coin that's better judged in hand.

AU-58. Maybe a gentle cleaning in the past. I've seen worse in problem-free TPG slabs.

I don't see any wear. Muted luster might be due to over-dipping, friction from very brief circulation, or toning. Strike is very strong and there are no obvious signs of abrasive cleaning. This is the scarcer Philadelphia coin and if it were mine I think I'd risk the grading fee to see what PCGS says about it.

might be an old cleaning, looks like a small rim ding at 10 oclock. Grade wise, I am at AU-55

Beautiful coin. I would seriously consider getting it slabbed though.

If it's not a 58 or cleaned, could well be 64 or better.

The surface appears to be acid treated or environment damage from those photos, the toning perhaps hid the imperfection, but I wouldn't turn a coin down for the right price.

Thank you everyone for your thoughts!

I think I'll probably send this one in to PCGS. I'll keep you all updated if I do.

I paid $900 for this coin, so I guess a little high, depending on how it actually grades.

The main reason I suspect this may be a "details" coin is that it's not already housed in a slab. I do like the overall appearance, given the pic, but a coin-in-hand look can always be more telling, methinks.

Good luck with the certification ... staying tuned
