Here's another British Commonwealth section. It is about the coins of South Africa, which have been issued since 1923.Since 1923,the coins have been struck in the following periods; King George V (1923-36),
King George VI (1937-52),Queen Elizabeth II (1953-60),1st. Republic (1961-84),2nd. Republic (1984-94),& the current 3rd. Republic (1994 onwards). The coins of South Africa right up to 1964 utilised the designs of George Kruger Grey, albeit modified in the 1961-64 coinage.
The most famous of all South African coins is the full Krugerrand,
which has been struck since 1967.The 1/10,1/4,& 1/2 Krugerrand coins have been struck since 1980.South Africa has issued a lot of circulating commemorative coins since the 1947 Royal Visit 5/-,
especially to commemorate former State Presidents C.R. Swart,J.J. Fouche,Nicolaas Diederichs,B.J. Vorster,Marais Viljoen,& P.W. Botha,
as well as former President Nelson Mandela.A pair of silver 1 Rand coins was issued in 1967 to commemorate H.F. Verwoerd, who was assassinated in 1966,& T.E. Donges, who was nominated as the 2nd. State President of South Africa, but died before he could have been installed.

I was reading an article the other day (recently) that claimed the South African coins were probably the best kept secret in the world right now and the author of the article was claiming it would be REAL WISE to start buying the older coins NOW as he was anticipating huge demand was coming. You heard anything along that line lately?

Well, collecting coins from South Africa is one of my strongest interests,as South Africa is a country that has regularly issued circulating commemorative coins,& besides,I
have a very strong knowledge of State Presidents & Presidents of South Africa.

This thread has stirred my interest in coins I know I have squirreled away...somewhere.

I really liked my South African coins. Started collecting them in the 1960's.

My largest South African collection, as best I can recall, was the cent, or penny. Wasn't there an antelope on the reverse? Very attractive coin. I must have 400-500...somewhere.

I can see that this will be a good project for me to work on the rest of the week. Finding my S.A. coins. I am certain I have nothing valuable, but I remember enjoying them because of their beauty.

If, and when I find them, I'll share what's been hidden from the light of day for all these years.

Gary, the 1961-64 South African 1c. coin has a waggon on the reverse,& those issued from 1965 until 2001 have 2 sparrows, just like on the Farthing (1923-60).The 2c. coins of the 1965-90 have an antelope on the reverse.
