I just picked up this interesting 1 Thaler German States Re-strike from ebay. I submit it here hoping that someone might be able to point me in the right direction to learn about it. The total cost to me was around $25.

I note that it appears to show Carolus on the obverse and the listing states that it's a re-strike.

I'd like to know more about its being a re-strike. Does that mean it's counterfeit? Does that mean that the date (1783) is not correct? What's the significance of the "prancing pony" on the reverse? Any help or ideas to reveal this coins history would be appreciated. Thanks, in advance. Jack

Jack,

It unfortunately appears that seller is simply selling modern numismatic forgeries (fake coins)

Genuine examples of this Thaler go for many hundreds of dollars

P.S. Off the top of my head, I believe the 'Prancing Pony' is actually the 'Saxon Steed'... The individual histories of each German State/Kingdom/Municipality/Duchy is fascinating...

JD - Thank you so much for taking the time to help me out. I know that there are authentic re-strikes (like the Maria Theresa thaler), but I had a bad feeling about this coin. I actually told myself "this can't be right", and then completely ignored my own best advice . I wrote to the Seller and asked him to explain why most of his listings are "re-strikes.' But, of course he hasn't answered.

Rather than go through the craziness of returning the coin for refund, I'll probably keep it to remind myself to think before jumping. I am starting to feel like the Seller should be reported if he's selling fakes and calling them re-strikes. That's supposed to be against ebay policy. I have done that before but ebay pretty much ignores my reporting. Thanks again. God bless you for your kindness. Jack

jack313 Sorry to hear you bought one of the numerous ebay forgeries. I wrote to simply advise you to look at other threads on the form to learn more about how ebay actually handles counterfeits and forgeries.

I posted the topic below with some current statistics on fraudulent ebay listings.

Swamperbob - I was hoping you might see my post. I really appreciate all you do with regard to phony ebay listings. It's entirely my fault. I saw it, even smelled it, AND STILL, I stepped in it! "There are none so blind as those who will not see."

Thanks for the reference, I'm heading over there as soon as I finish this post. Best regards, Jack

PS - The Seller (of course) never replied to my question about re-strikes vs. copies.
