Hello everyone, it's my first post so take it easy on me if I sound like I don't know what I am talking about. It is probably because I don't!
There is a long story behind how my family got this coin stemming back a few generations, but I won't bore you with that. The coin is in Scotland now.
I am just wondering if this coin is of any significant interest? I will try and put some pictures on at a later date depending on the response and if I can rise to the technical challenge of being able to do.
Thanks in advance.

Well, if that's authentic (and I'm not giving doubt here--but there were reportedly only 5 total minted as trials). What a coin! The 5 were minted in San Francisco as there's no mint in BC. In my Charest guide, the value is given as "unknown" due to no recent auctions. Interest? Uh...it would certainly generate much interest if put on auction at Torex!

Thanks for the reply. I'm afraid to say that I always look at the negative. Are replicas/copies of this coin common?
If there were only 5 made minted then I think it is unlikely that this would be one. It would be nice if it was though.

Don't take my word as any kind of negative! Perhaps it's just a copy, but only an expert could tell you for sure. If it's authentic, it would be worth quite a nice sum! The last auction involved a sale of two silver ($10 and $20) pattern coins, and one of the gold $20 patterns by private treaty for about $500,000.

Well...I can't possibly authenticate this, and I cannot tell if it's gold or silver from the photos. There were silver patterns made too, but does this coin have a reeded edge? It does look rather old, but certain details are different from the photos I have, so perhaps it's a copy made long ago...I'm not certain at all!

The story of the BC pattern gold coins. They're considered one of the classic rarities of the Canadian coin series. Sadly, this one's clearly not made of gold, and doesn't look "well-made" enough to be one of the silver die trials.

I agree with the above, some of the features look ever so slightly different. It does have reeded edge and if anything it lloks to be gilded.
However, if this is simply a replica, are these common? It seems to have come over from Canada many years ago and was given as a gift. Are these even common in Canada?

Judging by the crudeness of the crown and just the overall feel, I wouldn't be surprised if this were a rather old copy. I don't think it was ever meant to pass as the rare coin, but perhaps it was some kind of merchant's token or giveaway? There's probably an interesting history behind this. If you find anything more, let us know!
