Although I have collected various bill (mostly from circulation or crisp notes from the bank) I'm really new to collecting currency and have been following this forum trying to get a basic understanding or terms. One of the things that I'm not sure of is when someone refers to either an "A" or "B" block what are they referring to.

I assume that they are referring to the signatures but wouldn't any change in signatures turn a 2009 note into a 2009a. So what constitutes a block and would that definition remain the same no matter what the denomination is?

Blocks refer to the prefix and postfix letters in the serial numbers. A note with serial number AxxxxxxxxA would be from the A-A block; a note with serial number AxxxxxxxxB would be from the A-B block. Hope that helps.
