US Mint - In the final stage of production, an automatic counting machine, fitted with a sensor that detects correct products, counts the coins and drops them into large bags. The filled coin bags are weighed on a scale to make sure the contents are properly packed.

The bags are sealed shut, loaded onto pallets, and taken by forklifts to the vaults for storage, where they remain in inventory until needed in circulation.

I see now how the coins may come with dings and scratches.

I love watching these, but I was cringing watching the abuse the coins take even before they're bagged!

That's why you can't find really high grade coin even in the rolls the mint sells. They go through these same handling steps and suffer the same damage as the coins of new coins you get at the banks. That's why finding high grade business strike coins that don't have nicks, scratches, and contact marks is so difficult.
