Got a couple dollar rolls from the bank and came up with this. I assume the discoloration is the result of a proof in circulation (since the S indicates a proof from SanFran, I read) - but I can't, for the life of me, figure out what these lines are on the edge... three spaced evenly around the diameter of the coin. Can someone help me understand what I have here? Thanks!

The first two pics are just for comparison... obviously, the discolored coin in question is the one on the right. Any thoughts you guys could provide would be great. I love reading the posts on this site. Learning a lot from all the experience.

pretty sure the lines on the edge are the seams where the collar sections pressed around the planchet.

Business strikes have the edge lettering added by being force-spun through bar dies in a process separate from striking while the edge lettering on proof strikes is added at the time of striking with a three segment collar.

Interesting, I certainly didn't know that's how they applied the edge lettering on proofs. So is this a common thing to have residual spacings from the collars? And is this the coloring one would expect from a circulated proof? If so, do you know why?

That's a fairly normal color for circulated Presidential or Native American / Sacagawea dollar coins. They just tone that ugly color with handling, unfortunately.

Most (all?) of my proof golden dollar coins are still in OGP, so I can't check to see if I have those collar marks, but I suspect they would be present to some extent on any proof.

I'd keep it in my interesting "from circulation" finds jar but I don't think it's worth anything more than face in that condition.
